Volunteer at MAINfm

Music Director – Voluntary (8 hours per week) (August 2018)
Castlemaine District Radio (CDR Inc.) operates a community radio license to broadcast across the Mount Alexander Shire and surrounding districts.

A not-for-profit, incorporated association, managed by a Committee and supported by volunteer members and presenters, MAIN FM broadcasts on 94.9mhz on the FM band.

Purpose of the Position:
The Music Director has the responsibility for connecting MAINfm presenters with new music, facilitating interviews between MAINfm presenters and relevant local and touring musicians, and assisting MAINfm volunteers/presenters to ensure the automatic playlist is kept up to date with a broad range of music.

REPORTS TO: MAINfm Station Manager, MAINfm Programming Coordinator.

WORKING WITH: Station Manager, Programming Coordinator, Programming Committee, MAINfm presenters, volunteers.

LOCATION: MainFM studios, 1st Floor, Halford St, Castlemaine, 3450

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensuring the station’s music programming includes an appropriate mix of musical genres, consistent with MAINfm’s Music Policy and the organisation’s strategic objectives.
• Connecting MAINfm presenters with local and touring musicians for on-air interviews and opportunities to air new music within their chosen genre.
• Establish and maintain contacts with record companies and promoters to ensure a continuous flow of new material to the station.
• Solicit and review new recordings sent to the station and store them in the music library.
• Select music to be programmed into the station’s automated playlist.

SPECIALIST SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
• A breadth and depth of understanding and knowledge of music from a wide range of genres.
• Experience in and an understanding of community organisations and affairs, and the role of community broadcasting.
• Knowledge and understanding of the principles of community development, and the role of community broadcasting.
• Empathy with and experience communicating with people from diverse backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with volunteers and public from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
• Advanced computer skills: Word, Email, Excel, etc.
• Experience working within the music industry would be an advantage.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, and work as part of a team.
• Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and objectives of MAINfm and community radio.
• An ability to demonstrate a broad range of musical knowledge and taste.

MAINfm is a community radio station staffed almost entirely by volunteers – in fact around 90 presenters, committee members and station volunteers collaborate to keep MAINfm the voice of our local community.

Volunteering at MAINfm doesn’t just help us out – there are heaps of opportunities for experience, not only in media production and presentation, but in many behind-the-scenes areas such as:

  • Music Library management
  • Technical assistance
  • Audio production
  • Office administration and reception
  • Website maintenance
  • Promotion and fundraising
  • Outside Broadcast crew
  • IT support and maintenance
  • Committee roles

Please note:

  • You will need to successfully complete the MAINfm Presenter Training Course to qualify for consideration as a presenter.
  • You will be required to sign a Code of Practice to abide with the various clauses of our Code of Ethics and the policies of CDR Inc.
  • Membership of the organisation which is $50 a year. Becoming a member gives you a vote at any elections held by CDR Inc.
  • You may be required to apply for a ‘Working with Children’ authorisation. We do have forms available. Photo ID costs will be the responsibility of the individual.
