The Metamorphosis of the Castlemaine Pride Festival
Visibility and Diversity Matter in Mount Alexander Shire
From humble beginnings as a picnic in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens in 2018 to nine days of events in 2024, the Castlemaine Pride Festival is once again aglow with growth this year.
Last year, with funding from the Victorian Government, Castlemaine Pride undertook its largest and most comprehensive survey of local LGBTIQA+ community members to find out not only what they liked about Castlemaine Pride but also what was missing and where the festival could improve. It is now time to share the results of that survey with the community as the new Pride Committee endeavours to enact the communities’ suggestions. This year’s Pride Committee has hit the ground running to prepare for the many and varied events they have planned, beginning with the Mt Alexander Falcons’ game at the Harcourt Recreation Reserve on 19 April at 7pm.
Committee Chairperson Sherene Clow is excited about how the program is falling into place: ‘The festival is bookended by two major events that are free of charge and that we hope will have something for everyone: our beloved picnic on Saturday 20 April, featuring all day entertainment and a fun, family friendly vibe; and Q+ on Saturday 27 April in Mechanics Lane – an all day event featuring queer creatives and pop up activities, culminating in an all-ages dance event that evening.’
Other events that are locked in include pub sing and trivia at the Tap Room, a queer short film screening at the Northern Arts Hotel, a Nomads bush walk, a car scavenger hunt, an LGBTIQA+ tennis tournament and the picnic after party at the Bridge Hotel. The festival runs from 19 to 28 April. For more information head to castlemainepride.org.au
