This week, a friendly listener called to share something she cares about. Liz had recently finished celebrating Orthodox Easter and wondered if presenters might appreciate knowing which parts of our communities celebrate it, for future reference.
Liz explained that Orthodox Easter is very often called ‘Greek Orthodox Easter’, however there are actually many more nationalities that get involved.
There are multiple examples of common traditions across Australia’s ethnic groups celebrating Orthodox Easter, including members of the Russian, Eritrean, Armenian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian and Ethiopian communities.
This means that calling it Greek Orthodox Easter is to leave out many others to whom it’s an important time.
This was news to me, and I’m glad Liz called. Hope it’s helpful!
