An interview with Emerald – BEAT HAPPENING
Emerald: “I’ve only recently joined the MainFM community having just moved to the neighbourhood 9 or so months ago. But I’ve been listening to MainFM since my dad moved up to Castlemaine 7 years ago.
Before MainFM, I was volunteering at 3RRR 102.7FM in Naarm for about a decade. During that time I had a show on Saturday nights 8-10pm called ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’. I was also the Volunteers Representative running the vollie meetings and took part in the Board and Programming committee.
My show on MainFM, ‘Beat Happening’ is an exploration of independent, underground, and up and coming music from Australia and abroad. With a focus on independent music labels and everything from 90s garage rock, dolewave, jangle, disco, downtempo, jazz and dance. All music which makes you feel something.
I use social media to share my set list to highlight the different bands, artists, producers and labels I play, and to connect with people who might not have been able to tune in live. I also post to remind people that the show is on.
I really loved listening to Ali Currey’s ‘Music to Eat to’. Such a great idea for a radio show. And always discovering something new on ‘Fresh Produce’ with Emily.
Community radio to me means connection. Community radio has given me my nearest and dearest friends. It’s helped me feel grounded and inspired. And it’s shown me that I’m just a big old music nerd, in good company!
Whether it’s tuning in driving around town on a Sunday afternoon or on my way to Mt Alexander Falcons footy training, MainFM makes me feel connected to the community I’m living in. It ignites my passion for listening and discovering new music, and always teaches me something new.”
