Interview Opportunities – The Boite Schools Chorus

The Boite Schools Chorus will celebrate its 20th anniversary this August with a very special show titled Los Niños (The Children) which will feature music from around the globe with themes around protecting our natural environment and mitigation of climate change. The Boite Schools Chorus is an annual, un-auditioned massed choir event for schools and community youth choirs, with over 11,000 school-age children from across Victoria participating around the state since 2004. This year the choir is directed by Stella Savy and will be performed on Thursday 8th August at The Melbourne Town Hall, and on Sunday 18th August at Mount Clear Secondary College, Ballarat.

Students participating in the program explore music, language and cultures of the world in school programs with their teachers before coming together with other singers from across the state in a large scale concert. The project allows students and teachers to immerse themselves in diverse musical culture, to develop skills and confidence, and gives students the life changing experience of performing in a professionally presented concert.

This year the Boite Schools Chorus Los Niños is led by Artistic Director Stella Savy, who has worked with the project for several years. Says Stella: “I take great pleasure in curating a program for the Boite Schools Chorus, especially when selecting songs that align with this year’s theme. Climate change is a pressing issue that impacts us all, urging us to unite as a global community in efforts to create a sustainable future for our planet and ourselves. I am thrilled to announce that this year’s Boite Schools Chorus will be showcasing songs in eight different languages from various corners of the globe. Each composition carries a unique narrative advocating for environmental stewardship or celebrating the profound connection to different parts of the world.”

In line with this theme, elements of the program have been modified this year to raise awareness amongst the students about reducing our footprint. Some of the group rehearsals were held online instead of a physical rehearsal space to reduce transport, paper collateral and support materials have been reduced and provided digitally where possible, and in place of manufactured shirts for the performance, students will this year be provided with transfers to be applied to shirts they already have at home. This year, Boite Schools Chorus participants will not only gain a transformative experience, but will also discover some meaningful tools for reducing their impact on the planet long into the future.
