Guidelines of the use of AI

Dear MainFM Presenters,

We are in the process of drafting guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence.  Here are a few key points;

MainFM is committed to delivering authentic human voices.  AI generated voices are NOT to be broadcast.

In terms of using AI to generate written content, our draft guidelines at this stage point to a few things like:

  • Transparency:

Disclose when AI-generated content, such as a script used in broadcasts. Clearly state at the beginning, during, and after the broadcast that the script has been AI-generated. Rely on language that leaves no room for doubt, such as “The following words have been created with the use of AI”

  • Human Oversight:

Require human review and approval of AI-generated content to ensure it aligns with the station’s values and policies. Avoid relying on AI for sensitive or controversial topics without proper human vetting.

  • Ethical AI Use:

Use AI tools in a way that respects intellectual property, privacy, and consent.

Avoid generating or spreading AI-based misinformation.

  • Community Relevance:

Ensure AI-generated content reflects the station’s commitment to local and cultural relevance, avoiding generic or culturally insensitive material.

  • Limit Automation:

Ensure AI is used to enhance, not replace, human creativity, storytelling, and community engagement.

It’s a rapidly changing space which can make creating policy around it challenging. But for now, we lean on the anchor of our Strategic Plan which outlines our commitment to delivering ‘Authentic Content reflecting community interests and values’

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss, please reach out.

warm regards,

Steph Riddel (she/her)
